Fresh flowers bring beauty, fragrance, and joy to any space. However, their lifespan can be short if not cared for properly. With a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your blooms and keep them looking fresh for longer.
1. Trim the Stems
Before placing flowers in a vase, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from resting flat at the bottom of the vase, which can block water intake.
2. Use Clean Vases
Always use a clean vase to prevent bacteria from contaminating the water. Bacteria can shorten the life of your flowers and cause them to wilt faster.
3. Change Water Regularly
Replace the water in your vase every 2–3 days. Fresh water helps keep bacteria at bay and provides your flowers with the nutrients they need.
4. Remove Wilting Leaves and Petals
Remove any leaves that fall below the waterline and discard wilted petals. This prevents bacterial growth and keeps the water cleaner for longer.
5. Add Flower Food
Use the flower food that comes with bouquets or make your own by mixing sugar, lemon juice, and a small amount of bleach in water. This provides nutrients and reduces bacteria.
6. Keep Flowers in a Cool Place
Avoid placing flowers in direct sunlight, near heat sources, or close to fruits that release ethylene gas, which can accelerate wilting. A cool, shaded area helps them stay fresh longer.
7. Mist the Flowers
Lightly misting delicate flowers, like roses or orchids, with water can help keep their petals hydrated and vibrant.
